Mental Health and Well Being

Positive Mental Health and Well Being is important for our children, teachers and families. As a school we work hard to ensure that we all feel happy, positive, healthy, confident and engaged. All members of staff are responsible for the mental health and well being of our pupils but we also look after each other and our families.  Lauren Rowlands is our Pastoral Lead - she also plays a lead role, along with our headteacher, Mr Vermiglio to ensure that the Mental Health and Well Being of our children, teachers and families is as good as it can be.

What are the children learning about?

https://myhappymind.org/ - Through our PSHE lessons children learn about their brain, how we behave, react and handle situations. We use My Happy Mind to help our children learn how to keep a healthy mind.

Mental Health Support Team

Our Mental Health Support Team service will provide direct mental health support to 40 primary and secondary schools in Warrington.

The service aims to promote the early detection and prevention of mental health problems across the whole school and strengthen links between schools and mental health services.

The team will provide direct, ongoing support to schools around mental health and wellbeing. This will include:

  • Providing direct interventions to pupils with mild to moderate mental health conditions, such as anxiety, low mood or behavioural difficulties.
  • Where young people require specialist support, making onward referrals for pupils to local services, such as child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).
  • Providing training, education and advice to school staff to help them better support their pupils around mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • Championing mental wellbeing and resilience across the whole school community, providing guidance around issues such as bullying and coping with exam stress.

The service will sit alongside and complement any existing mental health support that schools have access to.

Five steps to mental wellbeing

Below are five things that, according to research, can really help to boost our mental wellbeing:

  • Connect – connect with the people around you: your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Spend time developing these relationships. Learn more in Connect for mental wellbeing.
  • Be active – you don't have to go to the gym. Take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life. Learn more in Get active for mental wellbeing.
  • Keep learning – learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and a new confidence. So why not sign up for that cooking course, start learning to play a musical instrument, or figure out how to fix your bike? Find out more in Learn for mental wellbeing.
  • Give to others – even the smallest act can count, whether it's a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering at your local community centre, can improve your mental wellbeing and help you build new social networks. Learn more in Give for mental wellbeing.
  • Be mindful – be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness "mindfulness". It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. Learn more in Mindfulness for mental wellbeing.

Myhappymind

At Locking Stumps we strive for a welcoming, personable and engaging school with a real community feel.  In our school we believe that children should be encouraged to develop as a well-rounded individual throughout their time in school and beyond and make positive contributions to our community.  The PSHE curriculum (tied strongly to our RSE Policy and Pastoral Care offer) enables the children to have the ability and willingness to build relationships, develop themselves as good citizens and develop skills for living in the current and future world.  Our aim is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to achieve their potential in the subject of PSHE and in their personal development.

As a school, we currently follow a science backed programme called “myhappymind” which focuses on:

Meet your Brain - Understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.

Celebrate - Understanding your unique character strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self-esteem.

Appreciate - Understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to wellbeing and resilience and we’re all about making it a habit!

Relate - Understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We’re focussed on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.

Engage - Understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to keep resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self-esteem and resilience too.
